Muscat – Over 120 golfers from the Sultanate participated in the keenly contested 20th Assarain Classic Golf tournament. The participants were competing in the 2-day, 36 hole event with Gross and Nett categories in Men’s, Ladies and Junior divisions. The event was held at the newly rebranded Ghala Golf Club and was open to all the golfers in Oman, with a registered USGA handicap.
The Assarain Classic Golf tournament 2015 has set a new level of golfing event in Oman. Leon Sassen, General Manager of Golf World, who managed the event, said: “The atmosphere was electric from the first day. I was truly amazed by the participation and overall feel of the 2015 Assarain Golf Classic. We were oversubscribed and had to have a cut off for players as we unfortunately could not fit all of them in, but overall was a tremendous occasion”.
The 2015 Assarain Classic had all the top amateur players in Oman, Azaan Al Rumhy, Tenzin Tsarong, Ali Hameed, Jeff Campbell, Sachin Bawa, Bernie Austwick, Hamed Al Rumhy, Jacky Franssen, Sanjoli Singh, Rashard Al Harthy, Hamood Al Harthy to name a few.
During the two days of the event the participants fiercely competed with American Jeff Campbell emerging as the champion with scores of 73 & 76 for a total of 149.Tenzin Tsarong with scores of 77 & 78 for a total 155 strokes finished second by count back over Oman National Team player Ali Hameed with scores of 75 & 80 totalling 155 strokes.
Commenting upon his win Jeff Campbell said, “The Assarain Golf Classic is a fantastic event every year and it feels great to win a competition of this stature. I would like to thank my playing partners over the last few days. It was a pleasure to be in this event and again I would like to thank the sponsor the Assarain Group of Companies”.
In the Mens Nett division, Anantha, Padmanabhan won with a combined Nett score of 141 followed by Ghala Golf Club Captain Steve Blee with 142. Murali Venkaesan came in third, narrowly missing second on count back also with a score of 142.
Defending her title Sanjoli Singh won the Ladies Gross division with a combined Gross score of 167 while Steffi Bohm won the Nett division with a combined score of 147.
Oman National Junior player Fahad Al Kitani had a combined Gross score of 176 to win the junior gross division while Rashad Al Harthy, also a Oman National Junior player won the Nett division with a total of 154.
Attending the final day ceremony included President of Ghala Golf Club His Highness Sayyid Taimur Bin As’ad Al Said and H.E Dr. Mohammed Bin Hamed Al Rumhy.
The Assarain Classic ended with its tradition of raffling off a Rolex watch, because of the value of the watch it cannot be used as a prize for the event. This year’s winner was Ghala Golf Club member Mrs. Ina Copier.
