Subba Rao won the second annual National Finance and Volvo Trucks and Buses Open at Ghala Valley Golf Club on the 12th December 2014. The event was highly anticipated with over 110 golfers registering to play for the Nett Championship Trophy. Mr Rao clinched the title with a score of 68 Nett, winning both the trophy and an ipad. A very close runner-up was Bharath Gopal who just lost out on the countback, also with a score of 68 Nett.
On the day, golfers played in teams of three, teeing off from 06.30 until 13.30 in the afternoon, finishing for a gala dinner and presentation ceremony in the evening, with the T-Band playing live for the guests. Furthermore, all the players were entered into a raffle with prizes sponsored by Gulf Air, OUA Travel, Zahara Travel and Shangri La. There was even a hole-in-one on the day from Carl Ainscough on the 12th hole, easily winning the Nearest the Pin competition.
In the Gross Division, Omani National Golfer, Azaan Al Rumhy, triumphed with a gross score of 73. Also from the Omani National team, Ali Hameed was the runner-up with a gross score of 76.
In the Junior Division, 14 year-old, Siddhant Dharwan achieved a score of 69 Nett, only two strokes away from winning the overall competition. Playing alongside side him, Joshua Pancras, was the runner-up in the junior division.
In the Ladies Division, Sarah Morris beat off the competition with a score of 75 Nett, winning a gift from Amouage. Jacky Franssen was the runner-up with a score of 82 Nett.
There were also prizes for the Best Front 9 score, won by Ewan Simpson with a score of 33 Nett, and a prize for the Best Back 9, won by Chris Edwards also with a 33 Nett score. Girish Chawla won the straightest drive competition with a fantastic shot on the 4th hole.
During the raffle, Helen Robertson won 2 free economy class tickets to any destination on the Gulf Air network, Mike Cuddihy won a one-night stay for a couple at The View and John Mendoza won coupons for dinner at the Shangri La.
National Finance, as one of the leading financial companies in the Sultanate joined with Volvo Trucks & Buses, represented by the IHE (International Heavy Equipment LLC) Trucks & Equipment division of the Zubair Automotive Group, to create this tournament. Their aim is to bring together all the golfers in Oman and to encourage juniors to take an interest in the sport. As such, junior golfers were invited to take part in the competition for free.
Commenting on the event after handing out prizes to the winners, Mr Taya Jandal Ali, Chairman of National Finance, complimented the players for some “outstanding play” and thanked the organizers and participants for making the event successful. Furthermore, Ram Mohan, General Manager of Volvo Trucks & Buses, added “Volvo Trucks and Bus Oman team was extremely happy with the overwhelming response for the golf day event and IHE, importer of Volvo Trucks & Buses in Oman thanked all the golfers in Oman for the interest shown in making this event a memorable event in the Ghala Valley golf calendar.”
