On the 15th November, over 107 golfers signed up to play in the ASaffa Golf Tournament at Ghala Valley Golf Club. It was the first event of its kind, promoting golf and healthy choices here in the Sultanate of Oman, following on from World Diabetes Day on the 14th November. The 18-hole stroke play competition was open to all golfers with a registered handicap, and as such there was a good mixture of amateur players at the event, from all the clubs in Oman.
The overall winner of the A’Saffa Golf Tournament was Barry Furlong with an impressive 68 Nett score. Barry, who has just recently moved to Muscat, played alongside Ghala Valley members Ketan Mehta and Rajesh Venkateswaran with a very consistent, strong game throughout the day. A close runner up was Nasser Al Touqi, who also scored an incredible 68 Nett score but just lost out to the overall title on the count back. He may have missed out on the title but Mr Al Touqi picked up the Nearest the Pin prize as well. Jeff Campbell, with a handicap of 3.3 went on to win the Best Gross Trophy with a gross score of 74. Rachel Connor won the ladies division, with a score of 73 Nett. Rachel had a fantastic game until the last hole, but still came out victorious. Fourteen-year-old, Siddhant Dhawan, triumphed in the junior division with a Nett score of 75. Finally, Ali Hameed, a very keen golfer and member of the Oman National Golf Team won the longest drive prize.
For the event, A’Saffa pulled out all the stops with every player given a welcome pack with a shirt and cap as well as breakfast after 9 holes. The evening meal, cooked and provided by A’Saffa, stole the show, with their finest chefs working tirelessly throughout the day to provide a buffet style dinner with fresh salads, hummus, and a selection of A’Saffa’s finest chicken barbeque and grilled products. Guests were seated in the brand new clubhouse for the presentation as A’Saffa’s Foods Chairman, Engineer Saleh Mohammed Al Shanfari, CEO – A’Saffa Foods, Dr. Nasser Al Mauly and Oil and Gas Minister, His Excellency Dr. Mohammed Bin Hamed Al Rumhy, distributed the trophies and prizes to the winners.
